* One bomb hung up and finally thrown off in water.

 

.....Two bombs were seen to hit the water line, though all others were in the assigned target areas. Due to the jungle covering no results could be observed.

.....

.....The fighters rendezvoused with the bombers over Feni Island at 0855 at 11,000’, and then continued to climb enroute to target. Two divisions took position of low cover at 13,000', while the other two divisions were medium cover at 16,000'. SBDs enroute were at 12,800'.

.....The route was over Borpop across New Ireland, thence up the southwest coast to the target area.

.....The fighters orbited at 10,000' over the target area while the SBDs made their bombing runs, and then made their dives immediately thereafter. The fighters made one strafing run on their respective targets after their bombing.

.....All planes rallied about four miles offshore at 3,000' and set on course home via the neck of land at Dolomakas Bay. The fighters were relieved of escort duty by the SBDs flight leader when just north of Borpop.
