Number 08. VAUGHN reported sighting a truck approximately
two miles north of Four Ways, heading north on the Kurakakaul
Road and requested permission to strafe it. GRIFFITH granted
permission. VAUGHN and RUMMEL then pushed over from eight
thousand feet in a steep diving turn to the right. RUMMEL
was approximately one thousand feet above and two thousand
feet behind VAUGHN in the dive. VAUGHN made a steep dire on
the truck, but he held his fire. Upon seeing VAUGHN's plane
crash, RUMMEL immediately affected a pullout from his dive
and recovered at about one thousand feet. The flight then
circled above the scene of the crash but was unable to observe
any life or activity. The administrative report submitted
officially lists Lieutenant VAUGHN as "missing in action".

The
exodus back home started this day for the ground echelon,
as its fourteen months in the South Pacific ended. Selected
were one hundred fifty-five weary Marines, consisting in
part of the "sick, lame, and lazy", and married men who
were figured to be of more use to their spouses. The contingent
augmented by one ground officer, left aboard an L.C.I. As
is usual in this cock-eyed world, those considered the best
workers were "penalized" by being retained, and are they
chafing at the bit.
Replacements
to the tune of one hundred thirty- seven men and ten officers
fresh from the states joined this date. All the officers
were pilots. i.e., Second Lieutenants Richard M. FOX, Donald
GERMSCHIED, Robert B. HOWARD, Hugh E. IRWIN, John W. JAMES,
Curtis D. JERNIGAN, Robert E. LINDSEY, Virgil A. LINGENFELTER,
