.....Our three divisions took off without incident and Joined up with the one division of Corsairs from VMF- 218 over the base and proceeded to Cape St. George where a rendezvous was made with 36 SBDs and 8 PBJs at 0800. Eight fighters took station over the entire flight at 16,000', with the other 8 fighters providing low cover at 13,000' (SBDs at 12,000' and PBJs at 11,000'). All planes were on course by 0805 and proceeded directly to target.

.....One plane developed engine trouble while near Cape St. George and wad forced to return to base with an escort.

.....SBDs dive bombed the Waitavalo targets, followed by the PBJs who made level bombing runs at 10,000'. The Corsairs hit the target last, 2 divisions on the easternmost target and 2 divisions on the western one, Pushovers were made at 11-13.000', angles of dive 60-70 degrees and releases at altitudes of 2-8,000'.

.....All bombing runs were made from NW to SE. After completion of bombing runs the Corsairs returned to their respective targets and made two strafing runs- no results were observed on the strafing.

.....No AA was encountered by the fighters though they did observe some meager inaccurate M/G tracers firing at the SBDs from the ridge 1,000 yards NE of the Waitavalo river mouth.

.....All planes of this squadron rallied at 4,000' off Cape Archway after the strafing runs and returned directly to base.

.....Observations: Pilots observed no activity in the area, A small fire, with bluish smoke rising to 50' was seen in the northern part of the western target area (1600' x 1100'). They reported the PBJs and SBDs to have gotten excellent coverage of assigned target areas.
